Beyond One City: Building a Pipeline for Youth Development

As we approach one year of basketball clinics in Kumasi, Ghana, African Bridge Foundation is beginning to look beyond our first community.

Our first year has given us an opportunity to learn, build relationships, work alongside coaches, and better understand what consistent access to athletics can mean for young people. It has also helped us think more intentionally about what comes next.

As we expand into more cities, our goal is not simply to host more basketball clinics. We want to begin building a broader pipeline of young people we can reach, get to know, and support throughout different stages of their development.

Youth development is not one-size-fits-all. As young people grow, their interests and needs can change. One athlete may need additional coaching or opportunities to compete. Another may benefit from academic resources, mentorship, equipment, leadership opportunities, or greater exposure to the possibilities available to them.

Building relationships over time allows us to better understand those differences.

It also allows us to move beyond the idea of a single event being the end of an organization’s involvement with a young person. A clinic can be an introduction. Continued participation can create a relationship. That relationship can help us identify where a young person may benefit from additional resources or opportunities.

Expanding into more cities gives us more opportunities to create those connections.

Our vision is to build a network of communities where young people can access opportunities through athletics and academics while developing relationships that can support them over time.

Kumasi gave us a place to begin. As we approach our first year, we are taking what we have learned and thinking about how we can build from it.

More cities means more communities reached, more young people connected, and more opportunities to support development.

We are still building the foundation, but the direction is becoming clearer.
